Els Devrieze is a visual artist based in Niel, Belgium, originally from Bruges. She focuses on painting, developing work that emerges from emotion and evolves through a layered process. Tension and materiality form the core of her practice.
Raised in a musical environment, Devrieze developed an early sensitivity to rhythm and the build-up of tension, elements that continue to resonate in her visual work.
She studied at the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts Van Eyck in Bruges and continues to expand her practice through ongoing training and research. A conscious and ecologically responsible use of materials is central to her approach.
My work comes from a place where things don’t settle.
I’m drawn to moments after intensity not the explosion itself, but what remains when something doesn’t resolve. A tension that stays present, held in place.
I work with minimal gestures, often reduced to a single line or trace. Not to simplify, but to contain. To keep something from spilling over. There is a constant push between control and what sits underneath it.
Painting becomes a way to hold that line between too much and just enough, between feeling deeply and keeping it together.
The work shifts in form across different series, but the core remains the same: a need to give shape to something that doesn’t easily disappear.
